After: a new electrical panel installed by Colonial Electric in Albany NY
After: a new panel in an Albany home.

The biggest electrical job most homeowners ever buy, and since the 2023 code took effect in New York it includes an outdoor emergency disconnect and whole-home surge protection. We run a load calculation first. If 100 amps is enough for your house, we say so.

Burnt electrical receptacle, a fire hazard found by Colonial Electric in an Albany NY home
A burnt receptacle found on a service call. This is what a warm outlet turns into.

A breaker that keeps tripping, an outlet that died, a smoke detector that will not stop chirping. The diagnostic covers the whole circuit, not one guess, and a single device repair is usually included. A warm or discolored outlet is a priority call: unplug it and phone us.

Underground electrical service trench dug by Colonial Electric in Albany NY
An underground service run in Albany. A charger in a detached garage takes a feed like this one.

A dedicated 240 volt circuit sized to your charger, the permit where your town requires one, and a straight answer to whether your panel can take it. Many homes can add a Level 2 charger on the service they already have. Call before you buy the charger; ten minutes on the phone avoids buying the wrong one.

Deck lighting installed by Colonial Electric
Deck lighting, installed by Colonial.

New fixtures, recessed lighting, switches and dimmers, and the outdoor lights that quit right before the clocks change. Usually the fixture is not dead; the dusk sensor is, and that is a quick repair. Bring your own fixture if you like, and tell us what it is when you call.

What happens when you call

1. A person answers.

You tell us what is going on, and we set up a visit with a technician.

2. You know who is coming.

You get a text and an email with the technician’s name when he is on the way. He arrives in uniform with a name badge, parks in the street, and puts shoe covers on at the door. Who we send into your home.

3. Plan on an hour.

The technician finds the problem, then walks you through what he found and your options, priced separately: what must be done now, what should be done, and what could wait. You decide.

4. The number does not move.

The price on the proposal is the price on the invoice, including when our own estimate was wrong. Two honest exceptions: a second, separate fault we could not see, or work you add once we are there. How the pricing promise works.

5. Inspected before we are paid.

Where the job needs a permit, we pull it, and an inspector who does not work for us signs off before we take final payment. How to verify any electrician, including us.

Questions about the work

How do you price a job?

From our straightforward pricing guide, the same guide for every customer. Your number depends on your house, and it is written on the proposal before we get the tools out. How the pricing promise works.

What happens after I call?

We set up a visit. A technician spends about an hour on the problem you called about and a look at the rest of the home, then goes over what he found, flagged red, yellow or green. The price for the work comes from our straightforward pricing guide once the technician has seen the job, and it is written down before anything starts.

What is the difference between amps, volts and watts, and why does it matter for my house?

Picture a garden hose. Volts are the water pressure, amps are how much water is flowing, and watts are the work the water does, like spinning a sprinkler. Volts times amps equals watts. Your house gets 120 and 240 volts from the utility, so the pressure is fixed. Your panel is rated in amps, usually 100 or 200, and that is the size of your main pipe. Everything you plug in uses watts. Run too much at once and you are asking a small pipe to carry more than it can, so the breaker shuts it off before the wire overheats. A panel upgrade is a bigger main pipe: more amps, same pressure.

Will I need a permit?

A new panel, a new circuit or an EV charger usually needs one; swapping a fixture on existing wiring usually does not. Where your town requires a permit, we pull it, and an inspector who does not work for us signs off before we take final payment.

Can you fix work another electrician did?

Yes. A good part of our week is undoing shortcuts. What we will not do is put a band-aid on it. If the only fix on offer is taping up a splice, we would rather not have the job.

Tell us what is going on. We will tell you what it costs.

A real person answers, asks the right questions, and gives you the price before anyone drives over.
