Electrician in Schenectady, NY

Panel upgrades, troubleshooting and repair, EV charger installation and lighting, quoted before we start. Here is what is different about electrical work inside the City of Schenectady, and what to ask any electrician before you let them in.

The city sets the rules, and Schenectady sets them high

New York State does not license electricians. Every rule about who may touch your wiring is written by your city or town, and Schenectady licenses electrical contractors through a board (§ 138-79 of the city code). The applicant has to be a master electrician, or have one holding a financial interest in the business, and everyone on staff has to work under a master electrician’s supervision.

The detail worth knowing is the insurance. The city requires licensed electrical contractors to carry liability insurance and to name the City as coinsured. We lay out all four Capital Region jurisdictions side by side in our city-by-city licensing guide, last verified against the published codes on 31 August 2026.

Older homes inside the city limits

Much of the housing in the City of Schenectady was built in the 1940s and 1950s, or earlier. The wiring is old, and just as often the walls are finished: every floor, every ceiling, nowhere easy to run a new wire. That limited access is the thing we plan around. Adding a circuit, upgrading a panel or running a line for an EV charger in a house like that takes more planning than the same job in a newer home, and we tell you what is reachable before we start, not after the wall is open.

Outside the city, the surrounding towns are more mixed. The house next door can be 200 years old while yours was built in 1980. That is why we evaluate every house on its own and do not quote from a street name.

What we do in Schenectady

Four residential services, all quoted before we start: panel upgrades, troubleshooting and repair, EV charger installation and lighting installation. Where the work needs a permit, we pull it, and an inspector who does not work for us signs off. You can see who we send into your home before anyone arrives.

We carry the Excellent Electrician® and Technician Seal of Safety™ marks. They are voluntary industry marks, not government licenses, and we explain what each one does and does not tell you on our certifications page. Contractors displaying these marks are independent contractors, not agents or affiliates of Aquila Investment Group, the owner of the marks.

Schenectady questions we hear most

Does an electrician need a license to work in the City of Schenectady?

Yes. The city licenses electrical contractors under § 138-79 of its code, and requires a master electrician behind every licensed business. Ask any electrician for their license number, then call the city to confirm it yourself.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Schenectady?

A new panel, a new circuit or an EV charger usually does. Swapping a fixture on existing wiring usually does not. If your job needs one, we pull it and schedule the inspection.

Do you work outside the city limits?

Yes. We serve Schenectady and the surrounding towns, including Niskayuna, Clifton Park, Guilderland and Colonie. The rules change at the town line, which is why we check which municipality your house is in before we quote.

How do I know the electrician at my door is who they say?

You get a text and an email with the technician’s name when they are on the way, and they arrive in uniform with a name badge. Read how we screen the people we send on the Technician Seal of Safety page.
