Electrician in Troy, NY

Panel upgrades, troubleshooting and repair, EV charger installation and lighting, quoted before we start. Here is how Troy licenses electricians, why a one-job license is not the same as a standing one, and what to ask before anyone starts work.

In Troy, every electrical company must employ a licensed master

Troy City Code Chapter 148 says no one may do electrical installation, alteration or repair work in the city without a license, or without working for a company that employs a license holder. It goes further: every company performing electrical work in Troy must employ a licensed master electrician (§ 148-3B).

The master license takes roughly six years of documented experience, an exam passed at 75% or better, and approval from the city Board of Electrical Examiners. Licenses expire at year end, and renewal needs six hours of continuing education plus proof of workers compensation or disability coverage. The full comparison with Albany, Schenectady and Colonie is in our licensing guide. Troy details last checked on 7 October 2026 against Chapter 148 and the city electrician license page.

A Class B license is a one-job pass, not a standing license

Troy also issues a Class B license to electricians licensed in another city or state. It is limited to a single continuous installation at one location and expires after one year (§ 148-3C). That is how an out-of-town contractor can work legally on your house once, but it is not the same as being licensed to work in Troy year after year.

So ask which license the electrician holds in Troy. We are licensed in Troy, and we will give you the number so you can confirm it with the city.

What to ask before anyone starts in Troy

Ask for the license number and which Troy license it is. Ask who is pulling the permit if your job needs one, and who inspects it. Ask whether the price you were given is the price on the invoice. To check a license yourself, call the Troy City Clerk office at 518-279-7134. Homeowners working on their own property are exempt from the licensing rule (§ 148-13), which is one more reason to ask who is actually doing the work.

What we do in Troy

Four residential services, all quoted before we start: panel upgrades, troubleshooting and repair, EV charger installation and lighting installation. Where the work needs a permit, we pull it, and an inspector who does not work for us signs off. You can see who we send into your home before anyone arrives.

We carry the Excellent Electrician® and Technician Seal of Safety™ marks. They are voluntary industry marks, not government licenses, and we explain what each one does and does not tell you on our certifications page. Contractors displaying these marks are independent contractors, not agents or affiliates of Aquila Investment Group, the owner of the marks.

Troy questions we hear most

Does an electrician need a license in Troy?

Yes. Under Chapter 148 of the city code, electrical work in Troy has to be done by a licensed electrician or by someone working for a company that employs a licensed master electrician. Ask for the license number and confirm it with the city.

Can an electrician from another city work in Troy?

Only with a Class B license for a single installation, or with a Troy license of their own. A Class B is a one-job permission, so ask which one you are getting.

How do I check an electrician license in Troy?

Ask the electrician for the license number, then call the Troy City Clerk office at 518-279-7134 and confirm it is current. Licenses expire at year end and have to be renewed.

How do I know the electrician at my door is who they say?

You get a text and an email with the technician’s name when they are on the way, and they arrive in uniform with a name badge. Read how we screen the people we send on the Technician Seal of Safety page.
