Lighting Installation, Indoors and Out
New fixtures, new switches and dimmers, recessed lighting, and the outdoor lights that always seem to quit right before the clocks change. Wired properly, on a permit where one is required, and quoted before we start.
Every job is priced from the same printed guide, for every customer.
Outdoor lighting, before the clocks change
Every October the same call comes in: the outside lights do not work, and nobody noticed all summer because it was light until nine. Most of the time the fixture is not dead. It is the photo eye, the small dusk sensor that tells the light to come on, and that is a quick repair. Lamp posts are the other one. Capital Region winters heave the ground, underground feeds fail, and the post goes dark. We find the break and fix it properly instead of splicing it and hoping.
If you want the lights sorted before Thanksgiving, call in October. Nobody wants us in the house between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, and we plan around that.
Inside: fixtures, recessed, switches and dimmers
Swapping a fixture, adding recessed lights to a kitchen or a finished basement, putting a light where there has never been one, replacing a switch with a dimmer or a three-way. The wiring behind the fixture is the job; the fixture is the part you get to pick.
Bring your own fixture if you like. We will tell you on the phone if it needs a box it does not have, a fan-rated mount, or a switch leg that does not exist yet. A new run that goes six feet or more is permit work in the City of Albany, and we pull it.
When the new light will not turn on
We get the call after the weekend project: the fixture is up, the switch is new, and nothing works. Usually the wall switch was controlling a receptacle, not the ceiling, or a three-gang switch from 1950 got its legs crossed. It happens to careful people. It does not change our price; it is still a diagnostic, and we will have it sorted the same visit. How our troubleshooting works.
Lighting questions we hear most
My outside light stopped working. Is the fixture dead?
Usually not. The small sensor that turns it on at dusk fails more often than the fixture, and that is a quick repair. A dark lamp post is more often a buried wire that failed over the winter.
Can you add a light where there is no wiring?
Yes. That is new wiring, priced from our guide before we start. If it needs a permit, we pull it.
Will you install a fixture I bought myself?
Yes. Tell us what it is when you call. Heavy fixtures and ceiling fans need a box rated to hold them, and we tell you before the visit, not from the ladder.
Do you do outdoor and landscape lighting?
Yes for deck, post and fixture lighting, including the buried wiring that feeds it, which is the part that fails in a Capital Region winter. For landscape and uplighting design we work with our preferred partner, Outdoor Lighting Products, who does great work. We handle the electrical side and the deck lighting ourselves.
How is lighting work priced?
From our printed guide, the same one for every customer. Your number depends on the fixture, the mount and whether new wiring is needed, and it is written on the proposal before we get the tools out.
