Electrician in Albany, NY

Panel upgrades, troubleshooting and repair, EV charger installation and lighting, quoted before we start. Here is what the City of Albany requires of an electrician, and how to tell whether your house is in Albany at all.

In Albany, a master electrician's license is the law

Albany City Code § 171-33 says no one may contract to perform permitted electrical work in the city without a valid master electrician’s license. Earning one takes seven years under another licensed master, or a bachelor’s degree in electrical power engineering plus three years supervised. The city also requires proof of workers’ compensation, unemployment and disability coverage, plus liability insurance (§ 171-43B).

Albany goes one step further than most. Section 171-50D makes it unlawful to employ anyone unlicensed to do permit work, so the company holding the license cannot send an unlicensed person to do the job. The full comparison with Schenectady, Troy and Colonie is in our licensing guide, last verified 31 August 2026.

Older homes, limited access

The oldest housing in the Capital Region sits inside the city limits, and in Albany that usually means finished floors and limited access to add new wire. Running a new circuit, upgrading a panel or adding an EV charger in a house like that takes planning, and we tell you what is reachable before we start. Outside the city the housing is newer and more mixed, and one street can hold a 200-year-old house next to one built in 1980. We evaluate every house on its own.

Is 12205 Albany or Colonie?

This catches people out. A 12205 ZIP writes as Albany and is often in the Town of Colonie. It matters because the rules are different: Colonie has no electrician’s license at all. Instead, work needs approval from an electrical inspection agency the Town Board has approved, and nothing gets energized before a certificate of compliance. Check the town, not the mailing address, and ask whoever is quoting your job which municipality they are working under.

What we do in Albany

Four residential services, all quoted before we start: panel upgrades, troubleshooting and repair, EV charger installation and lighting installation. Where the work needs a permit, we pull it, and an inspector who does not work for us signs off. You can see who we send into your home before anyone arrives.

We carry the Excellent Electrician® and Technician Seal of Safety™ marks. They are voluntary industry marks, not government licenses, and we explain what each one does and does not tell you on our certifications page. Contractors displaying these marks are independent contractors, not agents or affiliates of Aquila Investment Group, the owner of the marks.

Albany questions we hear most

Does an electrician need a license in Albany?

Yes. For any job that needs a permit, the city requires a master electrician’s license (§ 171-33), and it is unlawful to have an unlicensed person do the work (§ 171-50D). Ask for the license number and confirm it with the city.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Albany?

A new panel, a new circuit or an EV charger usually does. Swapping a fixture on existing wiring usually does not. If your job needs one, we pull it and schedule the inspection.

My address says Albany. Is my house really in Albany?

Not always. Many 12205 addresses are in the Town of Colonie. We check the municipality before we quote, because the licensing and inspection rules change at the line.

How do I know the electrician at my door is who they say?

You get a text and an email with the technician’s name when they are on the way, and they arrive in uniform with a name badge. Read how we screen the people we send on the Technician Seal of Safety page.
